Superintendent Summer Hires

The new superintendent has been given full permission by the Board of Education to hire for open positions ( this summer) without the Board's approval. What do you think of that decision?

  1. Lighten up. This is nothing new, and absolutely necessary. As of yesterday, there were 19 elementary teaching vacancies and convocation is Monday morning. You are looking for problems where there are none.

  2. I think the hiring of central office staff is what could be problematic. Lighten up yourself!

  3. Why problematic in CO?

  4. CO has major positions at stake. More than one set of eyes needs to be on top of those hires. I don't care how good the new super may be. It takes more than one to find a great fit. He doesn't have recent experience in Norwalk. Things have changed since he lived here.

  5. Let me share with everyone why I made the motion to give Supt. Rivera the temporary authority to hire interim administrators. And let me add that both of my motions were made on my own initiative.
First, at Norwalk High School there was the need for three housemasters- the school couldn't function without housemasters. If we waited to have a special meeting of the BOE, housemasters would not be hired until the day before school starts. That would be untenable.
Second, the authority is limited to interim appointees only- now, I recognize that interim appointees can stay indefinitely. However, I believe that because of the immediate crisis caused by so many administrative vacancies, the need for an orderly opening of school necessitates that emergency measures be taken.
Third, it is doubtful (at least in my opinion) that anyone would leave full-time employment to take an interim appointment with the hope of ultimately filling the job permanently. Don't forget, the interim appointees have no benefits, no sick leave, no vacation time and no entitlement to automatic raises that would be given to them if they were permanent employees in a bargaining unit.
