Did anyone else happen to notice the article in The Hour about Governor Malloy's support of a proposal that would not allow Federal energy assistance to those seniors and others who qualify but have electric heat or gas heat?
ReplyDeleteI was floored when I read the very short article. Many seniors move into senior housing and the building already has a heating system installed. While the companies can not turn the services off until after May 1st if the bill is unpaid, for someone who needs help with the bill and has electric heat, that means that they have no heat, no light, no hot water, no refrigerator, possibly no stove or oven, and no power for medical devices such as nebulizers or electric chair lifts. Those who have their gas turned off would probably fare a bit better, since they would most likely still have light and refrigerator, but possibly could lose the use of the stove and oven.
It seems to me that it would be fairer to reduce the amount right across the board rather than cutting out two whole subcategories of seniors based on decisions made years ago when their residences were constructed.
While private charities could help a little, most of them simply do not have the wherewithall to move large amounts of money that will apparently be needed to bridge the gap between the Federal energy assistance and the Seniors who no longer qualify or those who get a reduced amount. The State has apparently never contributed anything towards this because it was relying solely on Federal funding.
We need to be aware of it and to help our seniors anyway we can, whether it is by calling a legislator, or donating to a private organization that helps with energy assistance.
How about a local topic about why there is so little interest in the local election?
ReplyDeleteActually, I find it interesting that I've seen a number of campaign ads already and the candidates are not identifying their parties.
ReplyDeleteWhile I vote for the person, not the party, it is helpful to know what party platform the candidates are on. Also, I've been witness to several instances, not necessarily here in Norwalk, where if the Mayor of the municipality says one thing, the "loyal opposition" will oppose the matter whether it is to the benefit of all or not just because of the party lines.
