Presents for the Holidays

It's Christmas, Chanukah and Kwanza time. How about a space for sharing ideas for gifts that might help your child (niece, nephew, friend) in school. If you are sharing books, please list titles. Should we agree to buy at least one educational, age appropriate toy per family (per child)? What are your thoughts on presents? I hope we can digress from the usual dialogue to discuss this in a helpful way for families. Let me know what you think, please.

  1. Even though my daughters sometimes refer to them as "nerd gifts", I'm a big fan of the "educational" gift or two--
    1. When my daughers were little, a trip to The Age of Reason (on Post Road in Westport, around the corner from Riverside Ave. and just before the bridge into downtown Westport) was always the first stop for Christmas shopping. Great selection of unique gifts, interesting games and amazing books, craft kits and science kits.
    2. For something that combines an educational component (like reading and making connections) with family time, I love "Apples to Apples"-- a truly great game that the entire family can enjoy.

  2. In addition to gifts,, we make donations on behalf of our five grandchildren, at the suggestion of their parents (two of whom are our children). Now that several of them are old enough to understand (6 & 8), they tell us where they want the money to go. Last year their school crossing guard in NJ had cancer, so they wanted the donation to go to a cancer organization. They also talked about groups that fund surgery for children with cleft palates. Next weekend when we take three of them to the Big Apple Circus in NY (another gift), we'll talk about this year's donation. For the two little ones in DC, we've decided to donate to a non profit that benefits a public park they frequent.
