Great Managers are Scarce

If great managers seem scarce, it’s because the talent required to be one is rare. Gallup finds that great managers have the following talents:
  • They motivate every singleemployee to take action and engage them with a compelling mission and vision.
  • They have the assertiveness to drive outcomes and the ability to overcome adversity and resistance.
  • They create a culture of clear accountability.
  • They build relationships that create trust, open dialogue, and full transparency.
  • They make decisions that are based on productivity, not politics.
Gallup’s research reveals that about one in ten people possess all these necessary traits. While many people are endowed with some of them, few have the unique combination of talent needed to help a team achieve excellence in a way that significantly improves a company’s performance. These 10%, when put in manager roles, naturally engage team members and customers, retain top performers, and sustain a culture of high productivity. Combined, they contribute about 48% higher profit to their companies than average managers. (by Randall Beck and James Harter, Harvard Business Review))

  1. I'll take this one on:

-Accountability? Yet to be seen. Will we see it? Not sure this superintendent has the backbone for it.

-Decisions made without care for politics? Not happening with him. The K-5 ELA choice smacked of politics Apple politics? The Apples have this superintendent in their back pocket. They meet with him all the time. Additionally, his bonus is controlled by Apples. Built in politics!

-Trust, transparency? I'll let the administrators answer that one. I haven't heard yet about all the consultants and what firm they represent. So "Manny" questions, so few answers....except from Mike Lyons!

    1. 12.54: You are right about those Apples. They probably brought down that Malaysian jetliner too!

    2. No, they are too busy running Norwalk into the ground!

  2. Haven't you heard? The Apples are the cause of global warming, the Obamacare rollout, the Russian invasion of Crimea and, knowledgable observers on this site believe various tsunamis and earthquakes.

  3. Some people will go to great lengths to distract everyone from the real issue at hand. Do we have a leader or not? My feelings are that a large amount of tax payers' dollars have been spent by this superintendent on additional directors and administrators. Is this what a "world class" superintendent does? Hire his friends? Hire consultant buddies? I am seriously beginning to wonder.

  5. I am interested in everyone's thoughts about this superintendent's request for an additional administrator for K-5 literacy. What did the job description say for the K-12 ELA administrator? I would assume a language arts' administrator would have k-5 knowledge. What's with an added administrator in central office? Do we just nod and agree to this costly appointment?

  6. I'm in the system and I say yes, he does. And as far as a K-5 LA Administrator, we need someone. The building administrators need to get up to speed on Common Core for the transition. Don't forget, this is new for everyone and there's been no training for them, either.

There are no literacy teachers in the buildings, a lack of expertise in administrators. One person, with no support staff, cannot manage CCSS implementation in 19 buildings.
