What would you want the next NHS principal to accomplish?

What changes would you like to see at NHS? What do you want the next Norwalk High School principal to accomplish in his/her first year? While we are discussing changes, what do you want Susan Marks to accomplish this year? Big questions, yes, but well worth discussing. Let's take a look at the end of the year and see if your wishes came true, both this year for Marks and next year for the new NHS principal. Let's give them some up front goals!

  1. Since Mecca's "claim to fame" has been that he knows every kid by name, I think we can start with something a little more substantial.

There's some great teachers, but definitely room to clean out some dead wood on the teaching staff. Also, revamp the Guidance Dept., again a couple of keepers, but some others need to move on. All kids deserve a great guidance counselor in HS!

I've seen the BMHS Principal at many BOE meetings, speaking about programs, budget struggles and the success stories at BMHS. I can't say I've ever seen the Principal of NHS doing anything remotely close.

We need to start getting the kids ready for Common Core Standards.

  2. I have seen the NHS Principal at one or two BOE meetings. And by the way, NHS has higher scores than BMHS.

  3. Having a forward thinking building administrator is not the same as test scores. Point well taken on higher test scores. I think BMHS Principal is a far more involved principal.

  4. On paper, you would think that BMHS has the "more involved" principal. But, then there are the facts. She gets students from the 2 wealthiest parts of Norwalk, plus the best and brightest who go to CGS, and still had such lousy test scores she needs to appoint a parent council.
We might never know how Mecca did it, but he produced a student body that beat its cross town rival's test scores and had better school spirit. Maybe kids do better if they feel a connection to their school-- maybe that's what Mecca was doing all along. Just sayin' . . . .

  5. Any chance there's a dream candidate who combines Mr. Mecca's student pride and the BMHS principal's talents working with the faculty?

  6. If you find him/her, get a resume!

  8. Mecca "knows" every student by name because he is never doing any work. Hundreds of sudents are late each period. The building is dirty, moral is very low. He put his 5 years in to collect his pension. He has done probally 1 year of real work and leave sat 2:30 everyday. He does not support his staff.
