Superintendent Salary Criteria Released

HOLD YOUR HATS!

The base salary for the new superintendent may be $250,000 BUT

at the end of one year there is the opportunity for a 20% raise based on loose criteria.

That totals $300,000 per year! Where did the money come from, Mike Lyons? I thought we had a tight budget.

THERE's more! The superintendent has 80 hours (two weeks) to work at his company, IN ADDITION to his vacation days.

Please correct me if I have misquoted, but I don't think I did. It's possible, though since I am in a state of shock.......

correction: The Hour states the base salary is $220,000 with a $30,000 annuity. The 20% is taken on the salary of $220,000, which is a bonus of $44,000 based on the discretion of the BoE. It would still make this superintendent the highest paid in the state.  It also puts the superintendent in a position where he must be a puppet to the five members who will vote on that.

  1. Bruce Melion take note that there is no reaction to a total of $300,000 salary. Taxpayers seem to have money now.

  2. Hate to state the obvious but wouldn't you guess it would be the guys basic job responsibility to raise test scores? Why the heck would we pay him a bonus for raising scores? Isn't that like giving your mailcarrier a bonus for leaving your letters in your mailbox when he walks his route? Time to get these clowns on the board voted out of office. Or at least the idiot brigade that negotiated that contract.

  3. My understanding is that even if the test scores go up by 1/100th of a point (or less), the $50,000 bonus goes into effect. Did Mike Lyons negotiate the contract? What kind of a lawyer is he?

  4. King Mike is a total dip. I am taking a pay freeze this year, while someone who has NO direct contact with my students can receive up to a 44,000 dollar bonus based on my (and other teachers)work. How is that fair?

    1. Excellent point, 4:18. This BoE bashes teachers, disrespects their opinions, freezes their salaries, pays a bonus to a superintendent for raising test scores (but doesn't offer teachers any bonuses) and congratulates themselves on finding new ways to raise test scores. Geniuses!

    2. In support of the staff:
You can't put students first if you put teachers last.

    3. Well, I bet the OBE would love to give teachers bonuses but Bruce doesn't like them .... Maybe he should be asked?

  5. Is this blog run for teachers to air their gripes? I am a Norwalk parent and I have no issue with paying a Superintendent well. If that is what it takes to get a stellar Superintendent I am all for it.

Best Wishes Dr. Rivera! I'm looking forward to your tenure.

  6. I wish I cared about the new super's salary. I do care about the RINO's who claim to hold teachers' feet to the fire but give away the store to the new guy in town. I care about the RINO's who claim accountability is the answer but offer a big bonus to a guy for doing his job.
The one thing that makes me happy is that they're not offering a bonus for union busting. So I guess we have to take comfort in the small things.

  7. Dear Parent Who has no issues paying a Superintendent 'that kind of money' -
Above all, this blog was started to provide transparency for all. Right now providing transparency is a full time job here. The Board was not transparent about their search for a leader of the district. The anger and agendas of certain people on the Board was not transparent unless you were privy to inside stories. Now the process by which curriculum is chosen appears to be baffling to staff who is looking for answers. No transparency there. Did I get carried away with my own feelings? Perhaps. I 'should' simply report the news, but not comment on it with emotion. Difficult to do when so much is happening all at once. Guess I'll never be a journalist! My appologies.

    1. I don't understand, what was not transparent about the search?

    2. Are you kidding? The stakeholders are the taxpayers. These are the people who should have been involved all the way through. Instead the search was a deep dark secret. Those involved were sworn to secrecy.

  8. Time for Mike Lyons to resign. Mike, we all know you are an Apple. Shame on you! Resign now and do us all a favor.

  9. What's wrong with being an Apple?

  10. Well Apples are for accountability, raising the bar and closing the achievement gap.
    Pretty scary stuff

  11. I dont see the Apples as Angry. They seem to promote a national narrative. On the other hand..this blogg seems to hate everybody before they even get to our fair city.

    1. It is how they go about carrying their message across. These are people who seek power. They loved Susan Marks because she gave it to them without question. They were her cheerleaders. Susan and Haynie were attached at the hip. Haynie began making important decisions that Marks carried out. Marks couldn't think for herself without the Apples input. Daddona didn't give that authority to Apples. That's why they hated him. Hate is a powerful word. I used it knowing that. They hate Daddona. I don't see this blog as you do. It searches for transparency and uncovers the nastiness behind Apples. Most of us welcome Rivera, but don't like the way the search was carried on. Most of us like to think we have a say in how our tax dollars are spent. If Rivera comes in and shows he operates very independently of Apples, he will be praised here. That's my take on things.

    2. I've been Board-watching for years. In all my years, I can't recall members who were always opposed to one another. I never remember all the interest groups and fan clubs who were motivated by so much hatred of the other side.
For me that's a big reason why I won't vote for anyone associated with the RedApples. They have a double standard- attack Colarossi for asking Marks tough questions, but give Haynie and Barbis a pass for their cheapshots at Daddona. They say they want reform, but are trying to stop the new K-5 English program from being publicly discussed by the entire Board of Education. They said they were all about transparency, but don't have a problem with Mike Lyons trying to have an Executive Session meeting to discuss curriculum.
